24 August 2003 for immediate release Honda
Cowes Classic Round the Island Race - Round 4 of V24 Championship On
the final lap of the Round the Island race, V8 driven by Shelley Jory and navigated
by Gavin Brown 'tripped and stuffed' on the penultimate leg of the race. The boat
entered the water on the starboard side and was submersed. Jory and Brown followed
their safety and submersion training undertaken at Andark Diving in Southampton.
Following their training procedures, they deployed their air systems, released
their 5-point safety harnesses and evacuated the boat. The doors opened
during the impact and the boat was left bow up in the water. Safety ribs were
deployed immediately to the scene and were with the boat when the crew evacuated
and they were removed immediately from the water. The V24 diver onboard
the safety helicopter did not need to be deployed. The second V24 diver was used
to secure ropes to V8 in order for her to be towed to the craning area. Neither
Jory nor Brown sustained any major injury. Jory has a cut on her leg. They were
both checked by the on site ambulance crew when they returned to the pits. There
is no damage to the safety cell or windscreen of V8.
