24 August 2003 for immediate release The
V24 fleet came home from the Honda Cowes Classic having scooped several prizes
including third fastest boat around the Island behind two 1000hp Pro Vee boats! In
Sunday's prestigious round the island race, the seven strong V24 fleet set off
together with the RIBS and thundered their way around the course at an average
speed of 72mph, with Ricky Hill and Alan Layton in ColourPro's V9 coming home
first ahead of Peter Little and David Arthur in White Stuff's V27. Tom Powell
and Howard Stott in Black Breezer V7 took overall fourth place and third in the
V24 class. Sunday's race saw the first V24 race accident when Shelley Jory
and Gavin Brown's boat Winging It Offshore (V8) tripped and stuffed ending up
on its roof while they were in hot pursuit of Little and Arthur on the homeward
leg of the race. Jory and Brown followed their submersion training to the letter
and evacuated the boat within seconds of the incident. Having emerged unharmed
from what could have been a nasty accident, Jory was full of praise for her boat
and training commenting 'It was a frightening experience but my safety training
kicked in instinctively and I grabbed my air regulator, took a couple of breathes
and tried to find the door. I panicked a bit when I couldn't locate the handle
but I quickly realised that it had opened with the impact so I was able to just
release my harness and get out. Being in a V24 with the safety canopy I'm sure
saved my life.' Although the deck of the boat sustained enough damage to
put paid to their bid for the V24 Championship title, the safety cell within the
cockpit was not damaged at all and in the words of boat builder Mark Pascoe 'Did
just the job it is there for.' The enthusiasm for the V24s continues to
grow with a further two orders being confirmed in Cowes over the weekend. Since
Poole (16/17 August) deposits for six new V24s for next season have been taken.
The first race of the 2005 season will now see at least 15 boats on the starting
line. - ends -
