Southampton based Shelley Jory and navigator Gavin Brown, in their V24 powerboat Winging It Offshore, put on a blistering performance to finish second in the third round of the V24 Powerboat Championship in Cowes today (23 August) behind four times World Champions Peter Little and David Arthur in White Stuff's V27.

Seven one design V24 powerboats stormed down the start chute off Cowes Squadron neck and neck to start the first of their seven lap, 50 nautical mile course. Three boats had a slight edge by the end of first lap with Jory and Brown fighting for the lead with Cardiff's Ricky Hill and his Portsmouth navigator Alan Layton in V9.

The moderate seas suited the V24s down to the ground for some fast, thrilling racing with the boats averaging 70mph and the first three finishing with just 5 seconds between them. With the boats running so close together, every mark counted and a couple of out of shape turns by V8 allowed Little and Arthur through to a lead they maintained to the finish.

Poole based Richard Carr and James Sydenham in V69 and V24 series promoter Charles Gardiner and David Langmead (Chichester) fought neck and neck for fourth place with Gardiner taking Carr on the fourth lap to gain valuable championship points.

Little and Arthur now head the V24 Championship leader board by just 4 points with Jory and Brown in second place. With a £5000 going to the overall winner, there is everything to play for in the next two rounds. The penultimate V24 Championship round takes place tomorrow when these 24' boats compete in the Round the Island race starting at 10.45am from Cowes.
